G'day guys,

Today I introduce something that many of you will never have heard of - One Young World.

What IS One Young World?

One Young World was founded in 2009 by David Jones and Kate Robertson. It is a London-based charity that gathers together young people from around the world, helping them make lasting connections to create positive change. It stages an annual Summit where the young delegates, backed by the One Young World Counsellors, debate and formulate solutions for the pressing issues the world faces. No youth-dominated event outside the Olympic Games brings together more countries than One Young World.

At the 2010, 2011 and 2012 Summits delegates were guided by a line-up of Counsellors that included Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Bob Geldof, Kofi Annan, Professor Muhammad Yunus, HKH Prince Haakon of Norway, Jamie Oliver, Jack Dorsey and Joss Stone. Click here for full list of Counsellors.

After each Summit, the newly-minted One Young World Ambassadors work on their own initiatives or lend the power of the One Young World network to those already in existence. Of those in employment, many return to their companies and set about creating change from within, energising their corporate environment. Since the 2010 Summit, One Young World Ambassadors have been creating change on a global level. Previous initiatives have included the presentation of The Missing Millennium Development Goal to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and the creation of the first-ever African Student Leaders Summit.

To date, almost four million people have been directly impacted by the work of One Young World Ambassadors. There are currently more than 125 projects and initiatives involving in excess of 100 countries.

Who can be a One Young World Ambassador?

One Young World delegates are 18-30 years old and have demonstrated their leadership potential. Many have already had an impact in their home countries on a range of issues, including the role of business in society, transparency in business and government, the impact of climate change, global health and hunger relief.

If you think you meet the requirements, we'd welcome your application to join the pool of Candidates. Once approved, profiles are displayed on the One Young World website. Here, Candidates may seek the necessary funding to be a delegate at the Summit. Apply to attend here.

At the Summit Closing Ceremony, delegates graduate as One Young World Ambassadors, joining a global network of young leaders who are creating a positive change around the world.

How is it funded?

Delegates expenses to attend a Summit may be sponsored by private citizens, companies, NGOs, education establishments, etc. These backers are known as Delegate Champions.

To date, this funding, per delegate, is the only sponsorship that has been received by One Young World.

More information about how to become a Delegate Champion can be found here.

The cost for each delegate attending the Summit encompasses travel within the host city (to and from hotels and to and from break-out events), accommodation, meals, access to laptops, desktops and mobile devices, venue costs, chaperones and satellite and wireless connectivity.

2012 Summit

The third annual One Young World Summit

- held in Pittsburgh, Pa., on October 18-22.

The four-day Summit served as a platform for delegates, supported by high-profile counsellors, to address and identify solutions to the same issues that world leaders tackle every day – including global business and health, education and sustainable development, unemployment, the role of government versus global business, leadership and governance and social business.

Highlights from the One Young World 2012 Summit included:

  • An Opening Ceremony held in Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts, set to music from the world-famous Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Children's Festival Chorus of Pittsburgh, created an inspiring Flag-laying Ceremony. President Bill Clinton was the keynote speaker, and answered questions from delegates on pressing world issues.

  • Delegates attended an energetic and festive Welcome Bridge Party with fireworks on the Roberto Clemente Bridge.

  • Among the first-day highlights of the One Young World Summit was the announcement of the One Young World Social Business Accelerator. This new initiative will provide financing to growing social businesses, as well as access to the network of One Young World Ambassadors, to assist their development and expansion into new global markets.

  • Jamie Oliver, chef and founder of the Food Revolution, led a panel discussion about the global obesity and malnutrition epidemic. Oliver reinforced the importance of working within school systems to increase education about healthy eating and cooking. Oliver also inspired the city of Pittsburgh to take on the Food Revolution - announced at a press conference Thursday, Oct. 18 at Phipps Conservatory.

  • Jack Dorsey, creator of Twitter and Square, Bob Geldof, KBE and Ken Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch, participated in the Transparency and Integrity Plenary Session. Dorsey stressed the urgent need for transparency in business and in politics, adding that Twitter and Square were both built entirely on the foundation of transparency.

  • Saturday highlights included an ethical business panel, led by Antony Jenkins, executive director, Barclays. Panel participants included Will Hutton, author, Them & Us and former Editor-in-Chief, Observer; Sabine Zindera, VP Corporate Legal & Compliance, Siemens; Niel Golightly, VP Communications, Shell Oil Ltd.; and Doug Richard, entrepreneur and founder, School for Startups.

  • Also on Saturday, a Global Health plenary session addressed pressing international health issues, including HIV, AIDS and equality for people with disabilities.

  • On Saturday evening, the delegates spent time out and about in Pittsburgh. Breakout sessions were held at various Pittsburgh hot-spots, including the University of Pittsburgh's Cathedral of Learning, PNC Park, Phipps Conservatory and several non-profits and businesses. Then, they enjoyed relaxing home dinners with families (120!) all over the city, who opened their doors and hearts to One Young World.

  • Kofi Annan helped to bring the Summit to a close, by encouraging the delegates to become good global citizens, and that they should start small, by making positive change in their own communities.

  • During the closing ceremony of the One Young World Summit, delegates tied ribbons symbolic of their collective unity and hopes for the future and passed them onto the stage. Allegheny County Executive Richard Fitzgerald handed the One Young World baton to Chris Vondo, member of the Mayoral Committee of Johannesburg, site of the fourth annual One Young World Summit in 2013.
